Hanging in the Balance - The Fabric of Life

950mm x 600mm.  This is a freestanding piece suspended between 2 sheets of perspex.  The perspex represents my outer body and the work within indicates the life continually evolving as I accumulate more experiences.  Looking at the fabric from left to right many different colours have been used to represent different times of my life.  I have started with my birth, on the far left, in a pale blue as I perceive this to be innocence when entering the world.  The blue continues to darken until it becomes a deep, moody colour which is indicating where I was involved in a terrible car accident and suffered a broken neck.  The heartbeat placed along the work reflects this time and a ‘blip’ appears in red to show how fragile we all are.  Luckily with superb medical attention and support I slowly started to rehabilitate and this is shown in shades of green indicating rebirth and blooming.  As the colour lightens into yellow and then moves on into the burnt orange I am showing the later years of my life as a rich and fulfilling time.  To the far right, as my inner life leaves my body I have changed the regular heartbeat into a more organic wave to indicate the possibility of an afterlife, unknown to us at this time but left up to the imagination of the viewer.

Ice

This 2.2 metre long depiction of an iceberg is constructed as a triptych.  The white silk covered rods indicate fissures which have changed the landscape of the berg.  The encrusted lower edges show the possibility of ancient trapped inclusions, whilst the hanging beads bring to mind dripping ice signifying global warming.

Slow Down

Spaghetti Junction is the term commonly used for major roadway interchanges in Europe and America.

My sculpture aims to show the confusion that a jumble of roads and obstacles can create in a new driver.  It represents the aftermath of an accident involving a ‘P’ plate driver who was simply not experienced enough to judge the situation.  Entitled Slow Down, I hope it will make young drivers think twice about the frailties of the human body, and the possible dangers when behind the wheel of a 1.5 ton vehicle.

Body parts created and kindly donated by Chell’s Bits.
