Purlessence

77cm x 57cm

Painted and heated Tyvek, beading, machine embroidery and silk yarn on canvas, padded sateen and silk background.

I love the look and feel of oysters, the knobbly and aged looking exterior, their interior nacre and, of course, the wonderful pearls they produce.  From the idea of semi formed, or blistered, pearls nestled within their shells I developed the raised silk covered ovals and silk yarn focal areas.  The painted and distorted Tyvek indicates surrounding water with the light shining through to give a variety of colour reflections.

Entitled Purlessence this piece is trying to convey the very richness, and iridescence, of pearls by using metallic paints, shimmery sateen and glass pearls, with a highlight of magenta to draw the eye to the beauty of this natural phenomena.
